Sara Marriott
Dr. Sara Marriott is currently a 2023 Knauss Marine Policy Fellow with the USGS Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center. Sara fell in love with marine science from an early age, spending her summers in Cape Cod playing in tide pools and stomping in marshes. She received a B.S in Marine Biology and an M.S. in Coastal and Ocean Policy from UNC-Wilmington. After graduating, Sara spent nearly two years working on commercial pelagic longline vessels as an Observer for NOAA SEFSC. Between observing and starting her Ph.D., she worked with Rare, an NGO, in their fisheries program studying how marine protected areas and property rights impact fishing yield. She continued in this work during her Ph.D., which she received from the University of Southern Mississippi, where she researched small-scale fisheries in the Philippines. Specifically, her work investigates the connections between social and ecological systems in community-based fishing. Her research is focused on using interdisciplinary approaches to work closely with stakeholders to build sustainable fisheries that support both ecosystem health and fishermen. She hopes to continue working in the community-based fisheries space in her future career.
