About the Event

Presidents of professional scientific societies have a wide range of formal duties and responsibilities to their members over the course of their tenure. They also have the opportunity to leave their mark, influencing their society and bringing about change. Dr. Deborah Bronk (President, Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography, 2010-2012) and Dr. Amy Rosemond (President, Society for Freshwater Science, 2019-2020) will share their experiences leading these societies by chronicling the leadership roles that shaped their career paths, the culture they brought to their positions as presidents, and the achievements made during their tenure. In light of this year’s anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, special attention will be given to exploring their perspectives on the contributions women have made to the aquatic sciences, their increasing role as leaders in aquatic sciences, and the challenges and barriers that remain.

About our Speakers

Dr. Deborah Bronk, Ph.D., is the president and CEO of the Bigelow Laboratory of Ocean Sciences. Prior to joining the Bigelow Laboratory in February 2018, Dr. Bronk was the Moses D. Nunnally Distinguished Professor of Marine Science and department chair at Virginia Institute of Marine Science. She previously served as division director for the National Science Foundation’s Division of Ocean Science and as president of the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography from 2010-2012. She earned a Ph.D. in marine-estuarine and environmental sciences from the University of Maryland, and she has more than two decades of experience as a professor and an oceanographer. During that time, she has conducted more than 50 research cruises and field studies in freshwater and marine environments that stretch from pole to pole.

Dr. Amy Rosemond, Ph.D., is a Professor at the University of Georgia’s Odum School of Ecology. A biologist and stream ecologist by training, she earned her Ph.D. in biology at Vanderbilt University and has authored/co-authored 80 peer-reviewed journal articles on stream biogeochemistry and food webs, urban watersheds, freshwater biodiversity, and the impacts of global change on aquatic ecosystems. In that time, Dr. Rosemond has also served as a major advisor to 24 doctoral, masters, and undergraduate students. In 2018, Dr. Rosemond was elected a fellow of the Ecological Society of America and a year later began her term serving as the current president of the Society for Freshwater Science.
